Low Sperm Count

At Caperton Fertility Institute, we are the Southwest region’s most experienced fertility center, treating infertility issues in men and women. While treatment of male infertility is not typically seen as the starting point in the journey to solve infertility issues, fertility tests in men are an important part of determining the course of treatment in the partners.

Low sperm count or oligospermia refers to a low concentration of sperm and is a frequent finding in male infertility. Sperm concentration may also show abnormalities in morphology and motility, references to the size and shape (teratospermia) as well as their ability to “swim” with proper movement (asthenospermia).

Azoospermia refers to the absence of sperm in the ejaculate, either because the man does not produce sperm or because a blockage exists that prevents sperm from entering the semen.

The staff at our Albuquerque, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas fertility clinics understand how trying it can be for a man facing fertility issues. Determining the cause may require several semen analyses, and a number of visits with medical staff questioning your most personal habits. At Caperton Fertility, many of our staff have also experienced fertility issues, and we strive to make the appointments and conversations as easy as possible.

For those who think a low sperm count may be the reason for not getting pregnant, a complete physical and laboratory evaluation will be done by our staff on-site in our offices; once two or three semen analyses confirm an issue with the number or viability of sperm, we can determine the cause and look for treatment options.

Lifestyle modifications and/or medical treatment can be effective at increasing the sperm count at times. For some couples, intrauterine insemination (IUI with sperm washing and separation techniques) OR ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) using in vitro fertilization (IVF) are the mainstay of treatment when sperm counts are low. Caperton Fertility clinics are directed by board-certified fertility specialists with a proven professional history of helping patients succeed in their journey to parenthood through ICSI and other fertility procedures.

If the number of treatments for low sperm count do not produce results, we can also help you find donor sperm for therapeutic donor inseminations. This can be an option for men who do not want to undergo a complete evaluation or treatment, or for men who are found to have no sperm or suitable treatment options after a complete evaluation.
